Support Others

So today, I am thinking I am going to take a slightly different approach. Yeah I know it is only day three but I feel like the subject I picked for today is important to me.

So I have people in my life that have supported me in everything I have done thus far. These people support me in my education endeavors, my work as a missionary, and my spiritual journey. Not only are these people family but a lot of them are friends that have become family through my church and I am so very grateful to have them in my life. So recently one of these people have taken on a project to Feed the Hungry. You see she has made September 4th a day to stop and help, a day in which people everywhere should donate food and money to places that help end hunger in America. But these event isn't just focused on one city, oh no it was spread like wildfire. People on facebook and even twitter are spreading the news of this event to anyone and everyone that will listen. People are donating time, food, and money to the cause and then sharing it as statuses and tweets (so much better to read those then all the political nonsense going on). Yes I know that we should be helping others everyday but sometimes it takes that one person to start the fire to get us all to move into action.

Helping others is one of the many things that we as Christians are called to do. We are called to serve others in the name of Christ and to love others as he loves us. So here is my question, why does it take one person to start the fire when this is something we should be doing everyday anyway. Every day should be a day to feed the hungry, help the homeless, care for the sick and the needy, and over all be a good citizen in the kingdom of God. I see it everyday, people become selfish in their actions, and no one not even I am immune to the selfish tendencies. I will be honest there are many days in which I would rather buy a new DVD or CD that came out instead of giving money to a charity, I would rather spend my Saturdays lounging around doing nothing instead of giving my time to the church or community. But shouldn't it be the other way around. Shouldn't we as Christians want to give our time and money to others who need it more. Look at these readings:

Matthew 25:35-40 For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me.’ Then the righteous will answer him, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink? And when did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you? And when did we see you sick or in prison and visit you?’ And the King will answer them, ‘Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.’

Luke 3:10-11 And the crowds asked him, “What then shall we do?” And he answered them, “Whoever has two tunics is to share with him who has none, and whoever has food is to do likewise.”

Luke 12:33-34 Sell your possessions, and give to the needy. Provide yourselves with moneybags that do not grow old, with a treasure in the heavens that does not fail, where no thief approaches and no moth destroys. For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.

1 John 3:17 But if anyone has the world’s goods and sees his brother in need, yet closes his heart against him, how does God’s love abide in him?

1 John 3:17 But if anyone has the world’s goods and sees his brother in need, yet closes his heart against him, how does God’s love abide in him?

But most of all.....

John 15:12 “This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you…”

And the list can go on and on. Jesus preached on this, the apostles spoke of it, Moses, John, Paul, they all say the same things. how can we be full of God's love when we turn our backs on our brothers? As Christians it is our job to help those in need in our everyday lives.

Go look up the song If We Are The Body by Casting Crowns and listen to the words. Or here just read this part....

But if we are the body
Why aren't His arms reaching?
Why aren't His hands healing?
Why aren't His words teaching?
And if we are the body
Why aren't His feet going?
Why is His love not showing them there is a way?
There is a way

We are the Body of Christ, and as his body we have to privilege of serving others in his name. Whatever calls you to help serve, that is where God's calling is to you. My friends calling is in helping feed the hungry, I have recently felt called to help serve others with medical assistance in countries that can't give care to always help their own, I have friends that are called to serve those in prison. Whatever you feel like you are called to do, go out and do it! Take a step out of your comfort zone and help someone that you normally wouldn't. Once that comfort zone is broken you will be amazed at the journey that God will lay out for you. The only thing is you have to listen and trust in Him.

So go out today and help. Most important help the cause that is Feed the Hungry, help out at a local food bank, or donate money. Anything helps. But also find out what you are called to do.
